چکیده

Objectives: An event-related brain potential (ERP) study investigated whether spatially selective processing in vision and audition is controlled by a single supramodal system or by independent modality-speci®c systems. Methods: Event-related brain potentials were recorded in response to visual and auditory stimuli at attended and unattended locations. In the `Attend Same' condition, attention was directed to a single location in both modalities, while in the `Attend Opposite' condition, visual and auditory attention had to be directed into opposite directions. Results: Sensory-speci®c effects of attention on visual and auditory ERPs re ̄ecting attentional modulations of perceptual processing were obtained in the `Attend Same' condition, but not the `Attend Opposite' condition. Beyond 200 ms post-stimulus, attentional ERP effects were also found in the `Attend Opposite' condition. Conclusion: Results are inconsistent with the view that spatially selective processing is controlled by independent modality-speci®c systems. Effects of spatial attention on visual and auditory perceptual processing are closely linked, suggesting the existence of a supramodal attentional control system. At post-perceptual levels, attentional control may be more ̄exible. q 1999 Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd. All

About two-thirds of epilepsy patients who learn to control their slow cortical potential shifts (SCP) reduce their seizure rate, but the remaining third does not demonstrate clinical improvement. In the present study, this ®nding was replicated in a group of 27 patients with focal epilepsy. We found that patients who consistently produced larger negative SCP in all conditions during the ®rst ph...

Objective and methods: Sixteen polysomnographic recordings from 8 European sleep laboratories were analyzed. The histogram analysis was used to introduce quality control of all-night EEG recordings. Results: It was found that the header information does not always provide the real saturation values of the recording equipment. The entropy measure was used for the quantitative analysis of the dyn...

Objective: A system for electrode placement is described. It is designed for studies on topography and source analysis of spontaneous and evoked EEG activity. Method: The proposed system is based on the extended International 10±20 system which contains 74 electrodes, and extends this system up to 345 electrode locations. Results: The positioning and nomenclature of the electrode system is desc...

For algorithm developers, this review details recent approaches to the problem, compares the accuracy of various algorithms, identifies common testing issues and proposes some solutions. For the algorithm user, e.g. electroencephalograph (EEG) technician or neurologist, this review provides an estimate of algorithm accuracy and comparison to that of human experts. Manuscripts dated from 1975 ar...

Objectives: By using the Wavelet Transform, a time frequency representation with nearly optimal resolution, we studied responses to stimulation in the `alpha' range (10 Hz). Methods: Visual evoked responses of 10 healthy subjects were studied with 3 different stimulus types (no-task VEP, non-target and target stimulus). Results: Upon all the stimulus types, event-related responses in the 10 Hz ...
